NWS Special Weather Statement: Friday winter weather possibility

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MEMPHIS TN
354 PM CST WED FEB 2 2011

...SNOW POSSIBLE POSSIBLE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE MID-SOUTH BEGINNING THURSDAY NIGHT...

YET ANOTHER WINTER STORM IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT THE MID-SOUTH LATE THIS WEEK... POSSIBLY CONTINUING INTO EARLY SATURDAY. A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO TRACK OUT OF THE NORTH CENTRAL GULF INTO SOUTHERN GEORGIA. GIVEN THIS SCENARIO THE BEST CHANCE FOR MEASURABLE SNOWFALL WILL BE ACROSS NORTH MISSISSIPPI AND WEST TENNESSEE. AT THE SURFACE COLD AIR IS ALREADY IN PLACE... HOWEVER A NARROW LAYER OF WARM AIR ALOFT COULD RESULT IN A MIXTURE OF SLEET AND SNOW BEFORE MIDNIGHT IN NORTH MISSISSIPPI THURSDAY NIGHT. ALL PRECIPITATION SHOULD TRANSITION OVER TO SNOW AFTER MIDNIGHT. AS TEMPERATURES WARM ABOVE FREEZING ON FRIDAY PRECIPITATION SHOULD TURN BACK TO RAIN AND ANY ACCUMULATED SNOW WILL QUICKLY MELT. ROADWAYS WILL BE WET FRIDAY NIGHT AS TEMPERATURES FALL BACK BELOW FREEZING. TRAVEL COULD BECOME HAZARDOUS. TOTAL SNOWFALL COULD REACH TWO INCHES ALTHOUGH SNOWFALL ON THE GROUND SHOULD NOT EXCEED AN INCH DUE TO MELTING FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
