Severe weather possible on Monday, April 4

Severe weather chance for Monday, April 4, 2011
The Mid-South looks to be in a favorable position for the chance of strong to severe thunderstorms on Monday as a cold front moves through the region during the daytime hours.  The graphic above shows the chance of severe weather within 25 miles during the day Monday (and into Monday night for locations to our east).

Ahead of the system, deep low pressure will move from the Plains into the Great Lakes on Monday and a sharp cold front that will move through the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Ohio Valleys.  Ahead of the system, wind will pick up on Sunday with gusts in the Mid-South reaching 30 mph consistently and 40mph occasionally, as temperatures reach the lower 80s.  For this reason, a Wind Advisory has been issued from 9am to 8pm Sunday.  Wind will stay up in the 20s Sunday night as temperatures remain in the 65-70 degree range overnight.

As far as the severe threat, the most likely time frame for severe weather will be mid-day, or roughly from 10am-3pm.  Isolated strong to severe cells could form in the morning hours ahead of the front, but the main event will occur with the cold front as a line of storms is expected to cross the region.  Damaging wind and large hail are possible in the line, with an isolated threat of tornadoes.

By evening, the system will rapidly move east and temperatures will have already started falling. Skies will clear and wind will die down overnight, leading to temperatures near 40 by Tuesday morning. A cool spring day is on tap for Tuesday before another nice warm-up begins and yet another chance of rain shows up around Thursday.
